This was the site of a block of Peabody Trust Buildings. In 1915 there was a central courtyard.
During the Second World War an Air Raid shelter was built in the courtyard and this had not been removed by 1955.

The lines of the Metropolitan Railway can be seen through the open gaps in the centre of Farringdon Road behind high protective walls, showing how the railway has always run below the street level. No doubt many generations of railway men have lived in the Peabody Buildings over the decades.
