One can judge a civilization by its libraries and the amount of money put into them. Hornsey boasts two excellent Art Deco buildings, Hornsey Town Hall, which seems to become more elegant each time I see it, and Muswell Hill Library, for in the 1930s a rare thing happened: municipal pride and subtle designers came together to create two particularly good buildings. This lucky chance should now be celebrated by giving Muswell Hill library some loving care.
The above was written in about 1993. Since then there have been many changes in the nature and use of libraries, There have been fierce discussion about every aspect of libraries. In 2008 there are plans to enlarge the Library, so it will be interesting to see the outcome of all this debate.
