The Broadway Church

St James's Church had stood on the same site at the end of Muswell Hill Road for many years but, when Muswell Hill expanded suddenly about 1900, there were no churches for the Nonconformists. Edmondson, who was a Nonconformist himself, gave sites for the Presbyterian Church at the end of Princes Avenue and the Baptist Church at the top of Duke's Avenue. Both are placed with an architect's eye, so that today the Broadway has a church at each end and one in the centre, facing Hillfield Park. Muswell Hill Broadway had been given a commanding form for ever. In 1976 an attempt was made to demolish the Presbyterian church and redevelop the site for commercial purposes. This is the story of an attempt to destroy Edmondson's vision of a unified Broadway and its defeat.
